The Peabody Sisters

The Peabody Sisters

Three Women Who Ignited American Romanticism

by Megan Marshall

Drawing on well-researched notes, author Megan Marshall shapes the narrative of how Elizabeth, Mary, and Sophia Peabody struggled for standing and yet at the same time exerted influence in Boston social circles.

The cast of real-life characters often reads like a Who’s Who—Horace Mann, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Holmes himself—yet most intriguing are the details and nuance that Marshall uses to flesh out what made these people tick. And along the way, she helps reveal what is so special about New England, as the home of so many notable writers and thought leaders. —Katrina Farmer, Yankee associate editor

You say you want to marry a lighthouse keeper?

You say you want to marry a lighthouse keeper?

The Lighthouse Keeper's Wife by Connie Scovill Small

I once longed to marry a lighthouse keeper. I imagined days watching the fog roll by, spotting birds and whales, and looking for shells. After reading the autobiography of Connie Scovill Small—who was also profiled in Yankee back in 1982—I now know the romance of that role is outweighed by all the work. Hauling water, polishing brass, ironing lantern covers, canning fish … and the list goes on. Still, hers was a life filled with simple pleasures. Small’s lilting voice carries us from 1918 to 1980, through memories of her teenage years, when she started dating her future husband, Elson; to their posts at various light stations up and down the Maine coast; to post-retirement life. This read will keep you company no matter the time of year or weather; it’s like a beacon for the good old days. —Katrina Farmer, Yankee associate editor

Miss Rumphius

by Barbara Cooney, author & illustrator

Barbara Cooney's story of Alice Rumphius, who longed to travel the world, live in a house by the sea, and do something to make the world more beautiful, has a timeless quality that resonates with each new generation. The countless lupines that bloom along the coast of Maine are the legacy of the real Miss Rumphius, the Lupine Lady, who scattered lupine seeds everywhere she went.

Explore Nature with Sy Montgomery

The Soul of an Octopus

"As far as animals are concerned, my love is bottomless,” Sy Montgomery declares in Yankee’s 2021 profile of the best-selling New Hampshire naturalist and writer. That loves comes through again and again in The Soul of an Octopus, as she writes about the many eight-legged individuals she met during a globe-trotting journey to better understand this extraordinary group of species. Whether Montgomery is describing what it’s like to scuba dive or how it feels to “hold hands” with a baby octopus, her first-person storytelling puts the reader right there with her. With intelligence, humor, and heart, Montgomery proves that the best nature writing can make us feel the most human. —Jenn Johnson,Yankeesenior managing editor

Remembering Edie Clark

Remembering Edie Clark

A writer leaves her life on the page, which we can visit whenever we wish, as often as we desire. Edie lives on through her words, and she has left us hundreds of thousands of them. To say that she will be missed is an understatement. To say her work will endure long into the future is not. - Mel Allen, longtime editor of Yankee magazine

Get Inspired with Louisa May Alcott

How many millions of us have found ourselves in her words: “I want to do something splendid before I go into my castle—something heroic, or wonderful—that won’t be forgotten after I’m dead. I don't know what, but I’m on the watch for it, and mean to astonish you all, some day.”

In putting her own ambitions to paper, Alcott gave generations of girls a template for dreaming big, and living boldly.

Emily Dickinson

Prolific poet of Amherst, MA

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) was a poet with an exceptional ability to distill “amazing sense” from “ordinary meanings.” Her poetry is now considered among the finest in the English language.

Yet much about this fascinating figure’s life and work is misunderstood. Often caricatured in popular culture as a white-clad recluse who poured out morbid verse in the sanctuary of her bedroom, Emily Dickinson was a serious artist whose intellectual curiosity and emotional intensity are revealed in concise and compelling poems that capture a range of human experiences.
