The Story Behind Effie's Oatcakes
It all started with an oatcake. In Nova Scotia, Effie MacLellan learned a generations-old family farmhouse recipe for oatcakes—a beloved biscuit that was a staple in her pantry. When Effie moved to Massachusetts in the 1950s, she brought this cherished recipe with her, always ready to offer oatcakes to friends, family, and neighborhood kids. Years later, Effie's daughter Joan, along with her longtime friend Irene, recognized that these oatcakes were too exceptional to keep to themselves, and decided to share their family tradition with a wider audience.
